Road safety a topic of concern after recent deadly crashes

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The roads have been a deadly place for the past few days here in Region 8. In just three days eight people have died from accidents. The cause of those accidents can be a number of things.

"Distractions can involve a phone or a child," said Paragould Police Officer Brad Snyder. "Anything can come into play operating a motor vehicle and people need to realize that those vehicles are four thousand pound bullets basically."

With more people out on the road this time of year, many drivers try to avoid the times where traffic is heaviest.

AR governor to hold off on scheduling executions

By JEANNIE NUSS
Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe doesn't have any immediate plans to schedule executions for seven death row inmates even though the attorney general had asked him to set dates.

Beebe spokesman Matt DeCample told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the governor's decision to hold off on setting execution dates comes as the Department of Correction plans to rewrite its lethal injection protocol and as nine death row inmates challenge the state's new execution law in court.

Counties leery of 'Blueway' title for White River

STUTTGART, AR (AP) - Several counties along the White River are opposing a national designation that names the White River a National Blueway.

County leaders opposed to the measure say they're worried the national designation could mean limitations for landowners and farmers. But Emily Beyer of the U.S. Department of Interior says the National Blueways System is not regulatory, nor does it affect private property rights or governmental authorities.
