New Fowler Ctr. director brings multicultural experience

 

The Fowler Center at Arkansas State University has a new director.

According to a news release from ASU, Dr. Wendy Hymes is an accomplished musician and arts administrator.

A Missouri native, Dr. Hymes received her doctor of musical arts degree from Louisiana State University.  Her research interests include intercultural music, flute traditions from around the world and chamber music by diverse world composers.  Her doctoral dissertation resulted in the production of her first solo CD, “African Art Music for Flute.”

Families, Inc. Counseling Services is offering a free parenting presentation that may help.

“Managing Misbehavior in Children” will be held Friday, August 17, from 9 a.m. until noon.

Dr. Mike Davis, child psychologist, will present an overview of behavior change tactics focused on giving parents the tools they need to manage child behavior.

The training will take place at Families, Inc. at 1815 Pleasant Grove Road in Jonesboro, located behind Burger King on Hilltop.

Grant program to assist Arkansas ranchers during drought

 

Governor Mike Beebe announced Wednesday a grant program to assist Arkansas ranchers during the current drought.

The governor said he has set aside $2 million from the Governor’s Disaster Fund to help cattle, sheep and goat producers; many of who are finding it difficult to locate, grow or afford hay and other forage for their animals.

The program will be administered by the Arkansas Agriculture Department.  Payments will be made on a per-head basis for qualifying livestock producers.  The program is not first-come, first-served.

As a new school year is set to begin, the instrumental ensemble at Williams Baptist College is gearing up again. Director Corey Emerson said the Williams band hopes to add new members, including both students and local residents, as it begins its 2012-13 season.

WBC Lady Eagles Volleyball aims to continue success

The Williams Baptist College volleyball squad has won 71 games in the last three seasons, including the best record (27-9) in school history in 2011.  The players will go through three weeks of preseason practices and meetings. 

Williams has won at least 20 games in five of the last six seasons. Head Coach Eric Newell said the keys to continued success are "hard work, proper mind set (team first attitude), and staying healthy."

Teens arrested, charged with breaking into school

 

Two Imboden teens have been arrested in connection with a break-in at Sloan-Hendrix High School.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Jody Dotson, the 16- and 17-year-old suspects broke into the school’s bus shop on June 2 and vandalized a vehicle.  They also reportedly urinated on the floor.

The teens are also accused of breaking into the cafeteria and stealing a laptop computer.
