Sheriff says prime burglary suspect 'admitted' to area store thefts | Crime
A Poinsett County man is locked up in the Lawrence County Jail, accused of residential burglary and several thefts at area Walmart stores.
On Thursday, deputies arrested 20-year-old Cody Smith of Weiner on shoplifting and possession of stolen property charges.
According to an email from Sheriff Jody Dotson, deputies went to the home after his office received a call from the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office about a residential burglary and theft case they were investigating.
They reportedly said Smith was their "prime suspect" and thought he was at a home in Portia, Dotson said.
Deputies found Smith at the home and took him into custody.
Investigators reportedly read Smith his Miranda rights then began to question him about the Poinsett County case.
Dotson said Smith “admitted to the stolen items and then told deputies that he had also stolen items from the Walnut Ridge Walmart and from the Jonesboro Walmart.”
After he turned the items over to investigators, Dotson said deputies arrested Smith and took him to jail to await a bond hearing.
Poinsett County also placed a hold on Smith for their charges.
