Wanted sex offender arrested in Portia | Crime
A sex offender wanted in Missouri has been found living in Lawrence County.
On Wednesday, sheriff’s deputies arrested Jerry F. Smith at a home in Portia.
According to Sheriff Jody Dotson, the 52-year-old Potosi man was wanted on a felony warrant from Washington County, Missouri, for failing to register as a sex offender.
The warrant carried a $250,000 bond.
Dotson said the arrest came after a concerned citizen called his office to report Smith was a wanted sex offender.
Officers ran a check of Smith and discovered the warrant was valid.
Dotson said the check also revealed Smith had been convicted of raping a child.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Sex Offender Registry, Smith raped a 13-year-old Walnut Ridge girl in 1987.
The warrant also stated Smith had “violent tendencies” and urged citizens and law enforcement to “use caution.”
Officers went to the home in Portia where Smith was reportedly staying and arrested him without incident, Dotson said.
He is currently being held in the Lawrence County Jail awaiting extradition.
