Drivers fearful of Black River Bridge relieved by recent construction

BLACK ROCK, AR
(KAIT) – Some local drivers have feared that a bridge collapse like the one in
Washington State this week could happen closer to home.

People have been
particularly fearful of the aging Black River Bridge that connects Black Rock
and Portia on U.S. 63 in Lawrence County.

"I think that it's
in bad shape," said Aubrey Wilson of Cherokee Village.

Wilson and others have
found some comfort recently seeing the crews that have begun working on a new
bridge to span the river.

Kum & Go is joining the American Red Cross disaster relief effort in Oklahoma.

Now through Friday, May 31, customers will have the opportunity to add $1 to each purchase they make.

Every dollar donated will go directly to the Red Cross for relief efforts.

6 steps for healthy swimming

The Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer.  And that means trips to local rivers, lakes and swimming pools.

Before you hit the water for fun in the sun, the Arkansas Department of Health offers these steps to avoid recreational water illnesses (RWIs).

RWIs can cause a wide variety of problems, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections.

The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea, which can be caused by germs like cryptosporidium, norovirus and E. coli.

WBC Lady Eagles soar to Columbus for NAIA National Championship

The Williams Baptist College softball team ranks sixth in the NAIA
going into the 2013 NAIA National Championship round.  The Lady Eagles
will
play third ranked Lee University on Friday, May 24 at 6:30 p.m. CDT. 
The game will be played in Columbus, Ga., at the same field where the
U.S.A. women's softball team won gold in 1996.

Williams
enters the tournament with a 44-7 record on the season.  The team
advanced to the National Championship round by winning its opening round
bracket in Claremore,
Okla.

Clover Bend reunion this weekend

Clover Bend reunion this weekend

The annual Clover Bend School reunion will be held this Friday and Saturday, May 24-25.

The weekend festivities will begin with the traditional beans and cornbread supper at 6 p.m. Friday.  In addition to good food and friends, the fundraiser will also include a live auction and entertainment.

Saturday’s events start at 9:45 a.m. with the Brookland High School ROTC Department Color Guard raising the national and state colors at the Alice French Pavilion.
