Senior recital set for April 4

Megan Mathre of Bloomington, WI, will perform her senior recital at Williams Baptist College on Thursday, April 4.  The performance begins at 7 p.m. in the choral room of WBC’s Maddox Center.

Mathre will perform works from Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” and Bizet’s “Carmen.”  She will also sing a selection of classic sacred songs and a German song set by Richard Strauss.

Mathre is a senior music major at Williams and is the daughter of Robert and Susan Mathre of Bloomington.

As part of the Life-Long Learning series from the Arkansas State University-Newport Continuing Education Department, Randy Chlapecka from the Jackson County Cooperative Extension Office will do a presentation on gardening Saturday, April 27.

During this two-hour session, Chlapecka will use PowerPoint and real-life demonstrations to teach attendees how to improve their gardening skills.

After an exhaustive, nationwide search, Williams Baptist College has found its academic dean, and he is the man who has held the job since 1995. WBC announced Thursday that Dr. Kenneth Startup has agreed to return as academic dean and vice president for academic affairs.

Allyson Smith of Walnut Ridge is the new Miss Williams Baptist College.

According to an email from Grace Stolz, coordinator of public relations at WBC, Smith was crowned at the conclusion of the 2013 Miss WBC pageant Friday evening.

Smith is a freshman biology major.  Her parents are Allen and Kim Smith of Walnut Ridge.

First runner-up was Alex Western of Newport.  A freshman health and physical education major, she is the daughter of Wess Western and Kim Western.

For the second week in a row, the Williams Baptist College duo of Karisa Hendrix and Shelby Anderson has swiped American Midwest Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week honors.

Hendrix, last year's AMC Pitcher of the Year, had another stellar week on the mound.  She pitched three complete games and one relief appearance during the week.  The flamethrower struck out 24 batters in 19 innings of action, allowing just five hits and two runs.  This week brings her season record on the mound to 6-1.

Davidsonville invites schools to celebrate Archeology Month

 

Established in 1815, Davidsonville was on the cusp of the American frontier.

While paper documents tell some of its history, the true mystery lies beneath the ground.

On Friday, March 15, the Davidsonville Historic State Park will celebrate Archeology Month will a variety of activities for area school students.  The free event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Limited to 200 students, reservations are required.
